STEM Innovation and Design (STEM-ID) is the umbrella name for middle school curriculum materials developed as part of the Advanced Manufacturing and Prototyping Integrated to Unlock Potential (AMP-IT-UP) Math and Science Partnership project, generously funded by the National Science Foundation through grants #1238089 and #2101441. Available for free download, these STEM-ID materials promote STEM learning in science, mathematics and engineering/STEM by engaging students in problem-based inquiry lessons that emphasize collecting, visualizing, interpreting, and communicating authentic and compelling data.

Five years of research results show significant positive gains in student math and science test scores, and positive trends in non-cognitive factors such as engagement, science interest, math and science anxiety, and academic self-efficacy (Alemdar et.al., 2018).

STEM-ID Engineering Courses is an integrated STEM curriculum that guides students through the engineering design process as they practice foundational mathematics skills and engage in science practices aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Each of the three 18-week STEM-ID courses, created for 6th, 7th and 8th grade, uses project-based learning and engaging engineering challenges to support STEM academic engagement and to introduce students to increasingly challenging technological manipulatives.

STEM-ID Engineering Explorations introduces the Engineering Design Process. Below is a 2-3 week module that covers the concept of prototyping a product.

STEM-ID Science Explorations consist of nine 1-week modules that promote 3-dimentional teaching and data-related practices. Modules are situated in earth, life and physical science contexts.

STEM-ID Mathematics Explorations consist of nine 1-week modules that cover topics in statistics and algebra. All math modules promote problem-based learning within mathematics and require that students collect and interpret data to solve a real-world problem.
