Engineering is so much more than egg drops and popsicle stick bridges. While those activities can certainly be fun and engaging, they typically do not invoke a formal design process or content knowledge from other STEM disciplines. In STEM Innovation & Design, we use a convergence approach to creating engineering design challenges that are interesting and relevant for students and that intentionally build both analytical skills (such as designing experiments and calculating probabilities) and inventive skills (such as drawing upon background or experience to come up with unexpected solutions). In addition, we explore engineering across different spaces, such as at a carnival and inside of an airplane (i.e. not just the wing shape) so that more students feel included and invested in the outcomes. Having fun, doing the math, and designing innovative solutions are all part of the unique STEM-ID experience.
